very cool. however, this hurt the crap out of my eyes upon first viewing, and i'm pretty sure my brain started bleeding when i figured out what i was seeing. i don't know how i'm going to explain this to the doctor. how did you create this planet?

Thanks Erik, I'm glad I could hurt you in your eye again. I first created the equirectangular image you saw in the last post. That was made with eight separate fisheye photos stitched into a single image.

For this one I created a stereographic projection of the same scene. It still contains a complete 180*360 view of the scene, but in a completely different mapping.

I used a lot different software to get here, but the bulk of the work was done in the free, open-source Hugin. It's got a steep learning curve, but it's also very powerful.

As for you Neile, you've always been pretty great too.

terrific. i love how the bridge planet is eclipsing the watery one. there are plenty of metaphors and other crap in there - but, rest assured your time was well spent (how much time was it again?) and that more of these need to be maded by yourself.

Actual time spent creating the image (after taking the photos) was probably less than two hours. That said, I was learning new software, so total time was much longer. I used to use Realviz Stitcher to create these, but I'm much happier with my results from Hugin.

Hello

You don't know me obviously but I've found this photo through a Google search for 'fruition'. I'm wondering if I can stick it up on my blog, for a post with same name....I'm a writer, like to use images in posts when/where I can -- but don't like using fine ones such as these without permission!

Do let me know. Meanwhile I'll hold back the post.

Best,

Patricia

Go for it, Patricia. All I ask is that you use the source code from this post and allow the image to link back to that photo page in my Flickr account.

And thanks for asking!

The post will be hugely improved.
