Fun on the 4th

Fireworks

We decided to have Branden’s mom and sisters over for a sampling of Branden’s skilled grillary on the 4th. While picking up some last minute items at our local Acme supermarket, I received a call requesting that the menu be expanded to include baked beans. When I arrived home, I decided to put the bake in baked beans (as opposed to heating in a saucepan) and preheated the oven. 10’s of minutes into the preheat, I smell something a little odd and suddenly remember hiding a Tupperware container full of dirty utensils in the oven a couple of nights ago. I opened the door to find the once rectangular Tupperware, which was a proud host to many homemade truffles, now laying transformed into a puddle and dripping onto the oven floor. There’s no need to further the story.

Among the survivors were the silverware, some JA Henkel knives, and a Pampered Chef spatula (yes, ladies, these really are heat resistant). Sadly, our thermometer was swallowed up by melted plastic and was not able to be saved. I, too, would have been a casualty, but luckily I am still Linus’ primary food source, so Branden saw fit to spare me.

Just another reason why you shouldn’t purchase silverware that shalt not be put in the dishwasher.

I don’t have a picture of this, so I’m leaving you with a miscellaneous photo for this post (I like horses).

Ahh, good times. I can think of no better way to celebrate the birth of our nation. Nothing says “family get-together’ quite like the smell of burning plastic and a good ol’ fashioned argument.

…and I like horses as much as the next guy, but I gave you a more appropriate photo.

    See you next year!

Though some may not agree - beans in the pot, are just as good!

    but how were the beans?

One time, I accidentally left a turkey in the oven at 350 degrees for about 2 1/2 hours. I’ll never do that again!

Don’t worry Erik, the beans were not harmed.

The turkey is always stored under our back porch, so there was no problem there.

You said it, Branden, “good times”. Nothing like having a wife in the kitchen, eh?

Vanessa, the potted beans did taste fine. But, I like the thickening top of oven-baked beans. I don’t make turkey, but if I do, I’ll learn from your mistake.

Erik, all 3 lbs of the beans were fine as Branden indicated. Most of which are being stored in the fridge. I will send you some with the next batch of cookies.

I went to IKEA yesterday and thought of my Florida friends that aren’t so lucky.

There’s a comment bandit among us & I know who.

That’s no accident! A turkey in the oven at 350 degrees for 2 1/2 hrs is proper cooking for a 14 lb gobbler - just ask Alton Brown.

James - it was you! Evidence found in the hx on firefox. http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_8389,00.html

The oven is my favorive place to hide dirty silverware too.

Favorive!!!!!!! That’s even more favorite than favorite!

Thanks for getting my back on this one, Natalie. It’s nice to have supporters out there (although it still doesn’t help me convince Branden that this is an acceptable practice)!

Erik - Trader Joes was out of baked bean tarts. Something about being recalled due to a bad idea….

Vanessa - I trust you, and Alton Brown. You know who I don’t trust? Rachel Ray, all her 30 minute meals take 2 hours in my kitchen!
