Yes b, just posted also on “The Eraser”, I dig it. Heard the cat on NPR and read an interview in Spin. Love this dude more and more… You gotta let me listen to the Ulrich Schnauss piece.

Also just read a review on the “Avalanches” Sufjan’s piece. How is it? Spin said that Stevens might get burned out doing so much in so little time. I don’t know… he’s so good and super prolific, I wonder if I’m the one who might get burned out, but I don’t think so. We saw The Walkmen in Philly earlier this year, didn’t know you liked them. The show was bad because of the sound, which I could hear perfectly while urinating from the bathroom, however I wasn’t about to leave Lynne and two friend out on the floor by themselves with lots of peeps that went there for the supposed “free beer”, free beer ran out 15 minutes after the show started.

Senor Coconuts huh! Let me find out… I heard the Band of Horses’ not too long ago, I liked it but can’t remember it well now.

Yo we have to get together to sit and listen to music again… that was super dope!

I love that Eraser album more and more. I thought it was nominal at first listen, but it’s really grown on me.

Schnauss is phenomenal. This album is actually a reissue of an older disc. His latest album is equally amazing. I think you’d dig it.

Señor Coconut is actually the alias of a German DJ that creates Latin-themed electronic music. He did a well recieved cover album of Kraftwerk songs a couple years ago. This album is all covers of the 70s Japanese electropop group Yellow Magic Orchestra. The premise is bizarre and it just has to be heard to be understood.

As for The Avalanche, that album is amazing. There are no signs here of a pending burnout. It’s not really fair to call it an album of “outtakes.” It definitely stands on it’s own. This is really just proof that the Illinois album should have been two discs!

We’ve definitely got to get together soon. What’s going on with you this weekend? I could carve out some time for a listen session.

Yeah I knew about Senor Coconut’s method of concotion however just in theory but I’ve never listened to it. What does it compare to. It’s not like Eight Street Lounge, is it? I dig ESL, but don’t think that this would sound like them because of what I heard. When I first heard about their steez I thought it’d be cheesy, but if Branden is up for it, it must be good.
I also got to get the Avalanches joint! And what would you compare this Schnauss to?

Hey have you heard anything new from Nobukazu Takemura lately? I’ve been hungry for some o’ that!

This weekend is a bit fierce, too much happening, but I want to plan a bachelor party for Mark and we’re thinking about a show to go to to end the bachelor extravaganza. I’ve spoken t him about this, so he knows. I’d like you to come, so please come. I’ll tell you mo’ bout it lay-ERHS. I got this British accent thing rolling in me brain since I heard Thom the other day.

But we gotta plan on a listening day or night…

there are some fine tunes to be had
    here. Avalanche topping the list
of those that I’ve heard from this
list - though, I was pleasantly
surprised with how great Eraser is.
that was understood when I read
that Thom had been working on it
for the last 4 years and that many
of the audio came from kid A rec.
    sessions. concerning Sufjan, for
    the neo-sufjanite it would appear
    this guy is full-throttle heading
for burnout (they only learned of
his greatness in say the last year
or 2) but, if you’ve known him for
the last 6 or 7, you know that this
pace is just the way things are done and he’s not anywhere close to
done or even the least bit winded.
We go back pre-blue bunny days and
I can tell you he’s got plenty more
    up his greensleeves.
I wish I could say the same for my
    boy Ulrich! what’s goin’ on?!

While I’m here, I’ll amend the list
to include some that folks must’ve
slept on - which is super shameful.

Firstly, “Final Fantasy - He poos
    clouds” is an absolute masterpiece.
While it’s not for everyone - it
should be. the only people I can
    imagine not running through walls
to lay ahold of this beautiful lp
would have to be… hmm, americans.
but, you alone, brave reader, can turn the tide.

Nextly, “Icy Demons - Tears of a
Clone” is essential for fans of
the music they haven’t yet heard.
I love this album and will trash
the homes of those that try and
stop me. try, if you will, to
    imagine a session between john
    mcentire (tortoise.drums&bells)
    kele okereke & gordon moakes
    (blocparty.guitar&bass&vox)and
then maybe herve & werner (faust)
and all of deerhoof just show up.
    …and it’s stereolab’s practice
space. go’n get it this weekend.

    Lastly, “Lilies - Everything evil
is imaginary” came out earlier this
    year. still, I’m not comfortable
with how little I heard about it.
    It is absolutely great! apparently,
Kurt’s wife (of like a really long
time) left him and this is his
    answer. I couldn’t believe what I
was hearing the first 5 or 6 times.
…and you cannot (nor should you
ever) skip through this album. it
    unfolds beautifully as songs truly
surprise you (when’s the last time
    that happened?)and instruments come
wobbling in and out of the mix.
Sheesh! this one is so good. turn
down the lights and sit still - you
will think you had some drugs to
    eat. golly, for real? yes.

wow, I can’t believe you read all
this. I hate reading about sounds.
now, you know what you must do.

Señor Coconut is a completely different beast than ESL. It’s definitely tounge-in-cheek, but the guy pulls it off with a ton of talent.

I would compare Schnauss to M83. There’s also bits of Boards of Canada in there as well, but he’s really carving his own niche. Schnauss and M83 are two of the first acts that I heard that were referenced as “synthgazing,” an electronic second coming of shoegazing. I think that’s a pretty fair assessment, at least for my taste.

I’ll work on comp for you. Did you get a chance to work on that MBV disc I gave you?

  6. 6 Branden Jul 14th, 2006 at 1:44 pm

Wow, thanks for laying it all out there Luke! I totally agree with you on our boy Stevens. I’m rooting for him all the way. I’m just sorry that I waited so long to steal The Avalanche (I promise to buy it when it ships).

I’m not familiar with Final Fantasy or Icy Demons, but I’m on my way to check them out right now.

As for the latest Lilies, I’m stoked to hear that you like it. I’ve been a Heasley fan since his days of MBV emulation, but we’d fallen out of sorts on Precollection. That album had some gems on it, “Will My Lord Be Gardening” comes to mind, but mostly I was left feeling a little “meh.” I’ll definitely pick up the newest if you say it’s worth it.

  7. 7 Branden Jul 14th, 2006 at 1:47 pm

…and yeah, what is up with Schnauss? Two masterpieces and nothing for a while now. Let’s hope we’re not dealing with another Kevin Shields here.

  8. 8 rattlesnack Jul 14th, 2006 at 3:27 pm

yeah, or another Mark Hollis.*sniff sob sniff*

  9. 9 rattlesnack Jul 14th, 2006 at 3:36 pm

..oh yeah, it’s worth it. I never
    heard Precollection. interesting.
I left off on the 3 way - which was
not In the Presence of Nothing -
    and in like manner, Everything
Wrong is Imaginary is to the same
    degree quite unlike anything from
him previously - but hearkens back
to all of his work frequently
    throughout (including In the
    Presence…)surprisingly, while also
    treading new ground entirely -
and further proves that Heasley is
something of an extremely rare bird
    in his versatility and talent.

  11. 11 Jill Jul 18th, 2006 at 2:17 am

uhh…i have no idea who any of these “musicians” are….

  12. 12 the fourth samba Jul 18th, 2006 at 3:25 am

Yo, Branden, got yo mess age too late, so here it is… I heard Sufjan is playing here again in Sept.. Like I said, last show was a libation of goodness and indeed no burning out from him. Give me a buzzito tomorrow if you can or a South st. stroll like you recommended, slice of Lorenzo’s, whatever the death was burning in that trashcan and cats crossing the street yelling some crunk tunage.

Oh btw, i think you’d dig that record i got on Sunday, it’s good. Brazilian stuff (Milton Nascimento, Lo Borges), 60’s psychedelia and relaxation tapes…

  13. 13 Branden Jul 18th, 2006 at 3:47 am

Jill, none of these musicians were on the Princess Diaries “soundtrack.” That’s probably why you missed them.

  14. 14 Branden Jul 18th, 2006 at 3:53 am

Rubens, no sweat (unless you’re on South). I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.

  15. 15 Jill Jul 18th, 2006 at 3:53 pm

yeah….that must be it, “Branden.” I will have to expand my music selection a bit.
    Where’s Heather’s blog, btw??

  16. 16 Branden Jul 18th, 2006 at 6:24 pm

Heather runs the other way when she hears the word “blog.”

  17. 17 Old Doc Tucker Jul 23rd, 2006 at 6:17 pm

You guys are “lame”. You wouldn’t know a music if he bit you!

    Now, check it out.
